An appam or hoppers is a type of thin pancake . It is made with fermented rice batter and coconut milk, traditionally cooked in an appachatti, a deep pan similar in shape to a wok.
Idli is a traditional South Indian food. It is made by steaming batter made from rice and pulses (specifically black lentils), into two to three inches thick patties using a mold.
It has chana dal, onions, chillies, curry leaves and ginger. The vada is soaked in tamarind soup made with garlic, chilli powder, cumin powder, tamarind juice, asafoetida and curry leaves.
